Devil had a career as a successful race horse, but is being retired due to an injury which, while it prevents him from racing, does not prevent a career as a saddle horse. He is an outgoing horse who likes plenty of attention. If you get close enough, he will even give you a wet kiss on the cheek. He is playful and happy and is used to being handled daily by many hands.

Over the years, Devil has had hundreds of kids sit on his back in the cross ties or in his stall. He loves all sorts of treats including donuts and sour jujubes!

Devil gets along well with other animals and would love a friend in his field for company. He also loves dogs and cats.

Devil and his current owner have been together since Devil was a yearling and his owner is extremely attached to him. He wants the horse to have a chance for a new life with a loving home now that his race days are over and is hoping he may be able to visit him at his future home.

Currently housed in: Moncton, NB, where he is absolutely ecstatic to be under saddle and working.

Name: Woodbe a Devil

Yankee is retiring from racing, due to a 'flipping palate', which interferes with his breathing when trying to run a mile in 2 minutes or less. Speeds slower than 2 minutes don't cause problems. He returned on November 28 from a month's training, doing walk/trot/ canter and enjoying every minute of it immensely.

A quote from someone who knows him: "He has a pretty good temperament. A bit of a character and very curious. He will always require an experienced handler as he looks to his humans for reassurance in moments of stress. As long as you are confident, he will follow you anywhere! Always at something, chewing, sticking out his tongue, dancing, etc. but not at all mean. Loves people and dogs and always wants to be the centre of attention. First one to put his head out when you walk in the barn.

A whole different horse when wearing a harness and I have no reason to believe he wouldn't be the same under saddle. All business when he needs to be! You can actually watch his focus change when he hits the track."

Note from Sadie's Place: Yankee is indeed a funny, fun loving guy who really wants a home and a job. If you are looking for a horse that really wants to learn new skills, this is the one! He is an excellent horse to consider for someone wanting a hunter or jumper prospect. Yankee is fun and sociable and an absolute joy to have around the barn. I can't believe he is still here. We've updated his picture with one that more accurately shows what a good-looking guy he is.

Currently housed in: Nova Scotia (Antigonish area), in regular work and doing very well, would be a fantastic prospect for hunter classes.

We have a new picture of Tilly, which is much more flattering and still shows his kind eye and interested manner. If you are looking for a kind, easy going guy to keep another horse company and go on occasional hacks (or sleigh rides!), this is a good guy to look at. We've found his original owner, who tells us that Tilly was born in 2000 and that he had so much confidence in the horse's good nature that he would let his, at-the-time 8 year old son jog him on the track. Tilly did race (and his owner is obtaining his race record for us, because it's always fun to know what your horse has done before you had him!) and he still has relatives racing in Fredericton.

Dec 2: Tilly will be heading for a month's training in Mt. Herbert sometime the first week in December. We have high hopes for this friendly, easy-going guy.

Update: Apparently, Tilly is being a real gentleman. He walks, trots and canters well in the ring, but prefers to pace on the trail. His trainer has even hooked him in the sleigh and, after a bit of confusion about how heavy it was, he's been playing the part of Santa's next reindeer very well. Look at that face--doesn`t he just look happy to be out there?

Wyatt is a weanling standardbred colt who was born with a crooked leg. It causes him no difficulty, he trots and gallops around the pasture like mad, but it meant that he would never have a racing career. Because of this, he was never registered and would likely have been shipped for slaughter as having no value, if the livestock dealer hadn't called us and asked if we wanted him. Thank you Corey!

Update: Wyatt has had some farrier work done and his ankle is looking much better! He will still need regular farrier work, but his potential as a riding horse has improved a lot! As well, he has been gelded, and is doing well learning to lead and crosstie. He loves to be brushed and fussed over and just, in general, loves people. His latest picture shows that gangly, teenager look, but you can see that there is some breeding in him. Once his front end catches up with the back end, he'll be lovely!

Currently housed in: Brookfield

Name: Wyatt

Gender: colt

Age: 1.5 years

Chance was dropped off at Sadie's Place, literally just weeks away from starving to death. He's an older pony, whose teeth had worn down to the point where he could not eat without cutting his tongue and cheeks--he still has a lot of scar tissue and calluses interfering with chewing.

Chance is very well behaved, for the most part. He can be a little pushy around food, particularly when taken out to graze on a lead line, but this is a behaviour which should diminish in time. He is otherwise very respectful of your space. Chance will play 'keep away' a bit when you come to catch him, but is not particularly difficult to catch. We had his feet trimmed at the end of May (they only started growing this spring) and he was terrified for the first half of the procdure, but we hope that his trust in humans will continue to grow. He has gained back most of the weight he lost and now needs to go into work to continue to build up muscle.

Chance is actually just teetering on the edge of being fat--like most ponies, he gained weight quickly on the grass. We feel now that he is ready to look for a forever home, as a companion horse or for light trail riding. He has a lovely western style jog and still has loads of energy. He also loves getting out of the paddock and going for walks.

Lily is a lovely 2 year old filly whose owner wanted her to have a good home, when she didn't work out for racing. She is a lovely, loving filly and not very big at all! She was measured with the tape, but kept moving away from it, so her height is a best estimate, based on several tries. Being young, she's still full of pep and is raring and ready for a new career.

Her foster mom absolutely adores her--definitely a fiilly worth a look!

Jane is a lovely Standardbred mare, already trained for riding. She is very sweet, has started to fill out nicely & has a beautiful shiny coat now. She's adapted to her routine and has started nickering at her foster parents when she sees them coming.

Jane loves her grain and really appreciates carrots and apple treats! She loves to be scratched and groomed, which is good, because she also likes long naps stretched out in the sun (when she can get some!) And, we all know how nice and clean a horse stays during naps!

Jane has picked up some bad habits and her foster family is currently working with her to help her remember her manners on the ground. She's not very co-operative when you ask her to do something like picking up her feet or moving out of your space, but we've already seen some improvement--sounds like a case of 'rusty' ground manners. She's a smart mare and rather used to getting her own way all the time, so we believe that she is just going through some adjustment issues, from being the boss to being bossed. (I always hate that transition myself, hee hee hee!)

Update: Janie is indeed a smart little mare, so if you are aware of that, everything is great! She will `try`you, to see if she can get out of work, but accepts correction with a good deal of grace. We've had her under saddle and, while she is out of shape, she walk/trots very well and is always eager and good-natured. There is no dirt in this girl, but she does need someone who is willing to say, "I'm the boss and you're not!" Smart horses are such a lot of fun! I'd bet you could teach her to do just about anything!

Admiral is a handsome young gentleman, ready to take on the world as a saddle horse. A minor bowed tendon ended his race career but is certainly no impediment to a career under saddle. As you can see in the picture, he is very well put together. In terms of his personality, so many of our members have gushed over his trusting demeanor and his willingness to try anything that it makes me quite jealous! He has a good work ethic and has just been started under saddle, but hasn't been backed yet. In true Admiral form, he accepted the saddle with an almost shocking lack of fuss and seems to be curious and eager to see what new tricks we have for him to learn.

Whoever takes him home will be a lucky, lucky rider. He's going to make someone a fabulous mount and a wonderful best friend.
